It may have been their first Grammy Awards, but the Tennessee brothers that make up Kings of Leon were extremely calm and collected, even up to the point when they were awarded Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for “Sex on Fire,” beating out Coldplay, the Eagles, Radiohead and AC/DC in the category. Though the guys aren’t unfamiliar with recording in the studio, “Sex on Fire” appearing on their fourth studio effort, they are relatively new to the whole mainstream world. Just in time to exploit their success comes a national tour, where Kings of Leon tickets won’t go unnoticed online as they plan on continue collecting more awards in the future.
With a Grammy on their hip, the Followill crew, brothers Caleb, Nathan and Jared along with cousin Matthew, are gearing up for their first headlining tour via Boston’s Agganis Arena in April through Canada and a few more spots through the end of May. After Kings of Leon sold out Madison Square Garden’s show a week ago, the guy’s promoters quickly added a list of performances that will follow their stream of success.
The group, who was nominated for two others Grammys besides their win for Best Rock Albums and Best Rock Song, released Only by the Night with RCA in September 2008 and saw a debut on The Billboard 200. Only by the Night was the group’s first to appear on the US charts, as previous releases (2003’s Youth & Young Manhood, 2005’s Aha Shake Heartbreak and 2007’s Because of the Times) only reached the UK rock charts. It’s not a far fetch that Only by the Night is the quartet’s most complex and musically stimulating album yet, as it sites references to U2 (minus Bono’s fierce political agenda) and Led Zepplin’s true rock touch.
The guys were healing suspicions following their third album, as Entertainment Weekly called it a “crowning achievement” while Rolling Stone thought, “How good can the Kings of Leon get? They’ve already gone further than anybody could have guessed.” But further they reached, as Only by the Night peaked at number five on The Billboard 200 the week it was released, number four on the Top Canadian Albums and number five on the Top Internet Albums. It wasn’t just the bands new rhythm and confidence that got them there, but also the group’s hot mainstream hit, “Sex on Fire,” a single that reached the top of the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart.
